Fiber Loves Your Heart

Fiber plays an important role in lowering your risk of heart disease. Harvard researchers found that a high total dietary fiber intake was linked to a 40 percent lower risk of heart disease. In addition, several studies show a high-fiber diet with whole grains can also help prevent metabolic syndrome, which often leads to heart disease as well as diabetes.

One of fiber’s key heart benefits is in reducing cholesterol. Including soluble fibers in your diet, such as those found in citrus fruits, oats, lentils and beans, reduces LDL (bad) cholesterol even lower than a diet low in saturated and trans fats and cholesterol alone. Oats have the highest proportion of soluble fiber of any grain.

Studies show fiber can also help reduce or even prevent high blood pressure. A Harvard study showed an intake of 24 grams/day or more of fiber was found to provide significant protection against developing high blood pressure.

Another study of people who already had high blood pressure showed that adding fiber to their diet significantly reduced both systolic (the top number in a blood pressure reading) and diastolic (the bottom number) blood pressure.

The average American only eats about 15 grams of dietary fiber per day, which is just half of the American Dietetic Association recommended amounts of 20 to 35 grams.

To boost your fiber intake and your heart health, add Relìv’s FibRestore® to your daily diet. It’s loaded with 10 grams of soluble and insoluble fiber per serving, plus Beta Carotene and Vitamins C and E. In clinical trial, Relìv Now® and FibRestore were shown to reduce average cholesterol by 14 percent while also reducing average LDL, triglycerides, and uric acid levels. View the study.

Four Nutrients That May Help Prevent Headaches

When you look around the world today, we face big headaches: environmental disasters, financial crises and political unrest. But if your own head hurts, that’s all you can focus on.  Headaches affect nearly everyone at some point. Types of headaches include tension headaches, migraines, cluster headaches and sinus headaches.

Migraines are one of the more painful types of headaches. They usually cause throbbing or pulsing on one side of the head and may be accompanied by nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light and sound. Some foods, alcohol, food additives such as monosodium glutamate (MSG) or nitrates, and artificial sweeteners such as aspartame may trigger migraines. Anxiety, stress, lack of sleep, skipping meals (which causes low blood sugar) and dehydration can also kick off these painful headaches.

You may turn to prescription and over-the-counter medications to treat or prevent migraines. But these can be expensive, cause side effects and even cause rebound headaches — a vicious cycle. The good news is there may be another way to prevent the misery of migraines. Studies are showing some migraines may be caused by deficiencies in certain nutrients. To find headache help, check out the following vitamins and minerals:

Headache Helpers

Magnesium: This mineral is essential to many body functions. It relaxes your nerves and muscles, builds and strengthens bones and keeps your blood circulating smoothly. Several studies show people with migraines have low levels of magnesium. In addition, studies have shown that supplementation with magnesium reduced the frequency of migraines. To increase your levels of magnesium, eat nuts, legumes, dark green leafy vegetables, soy products, whole grains and seafood.

Riboflavin (B2): This vitamin is essential for normal cell function, growth and energy production. When you don’t get enough riboflavin, you may have headaches, fatigue, visual disturbances, digestive problems, cracks in the mouth, and sensitivity to light. However, one study showed daily supplementation with riboflavin significantly decreased migraine attacks. Good sources of riboflavin include dairy products, eggs, enriched cereals/grains, meats, liver and green vegetables.

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10): This compound boosts energy, enhances the immune system, and acts as an antioxidant. Aging and certain medications and diseases can reduce the body’s production of CoQ10. An article in the April 2002 issue of the Journal of the International Headache Society reports more than 60 percent of the patients in a trial cut the frequency of their migraine attacks at least in half after four months. Key sources of CoQ10 include salmon and tuna, organ meats (such as liver) and whole grains.

Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA): This compound, which acts as an antioxidant, is important in the energy-related functions of the body’s cells. A recent study shows supplementing with ALA reduced the frequency, intensity and number of headache days in migraine sufferers. ALA also maximizes the positive effects of other antioxidants such coenzyme Q10. ALA is found in red meat, organ meats and yeast.

Shake It Up

Unfortunately, many of us don’t eat a nutritionally balanced diet and may even cut out some food groups entirely. Relìv nutritional supplements offer the optimum balance of nutrients to support good health. Many also contain the headache-relieving ingredients discussed above. For example, Relìv Now®, Relìv Classic® and Relìv Now for Kids contain magnesium and riboflavin, along with a host of other essential nutrients. And GlucAffect®, ReversAge® and ProVantage® all contain both CoQ10 and ALA. So with just about every Relìv product choice, you’re benefiting from potential headache help as well as the vital nutrition your body craves.

Our Hearts Are at Risk

We know, based on multiple studies, that your diet can either work for or against you when it comes to heart disease risk. Heart-healthy foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains and fish should be staples of our daily diet. Unfortunately, that’s not the case for far too many people.

After seeing friends and family suffer the consequences of skipping key heart-healthy nutrients, I developed CardioSentials®. CardioSentials works on multiple levels to support total heart health. It has been clinically shown to reduce total cholesterol, LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglycerides, and increases HDL (good) cholesterol. The unique formula includes potent antioxidants, CoQ10, phytosterols, and other heart-protecting, synergistic nutrients that address a range of factors to reduce the risk of heart disease. Health Is All in the Family

In your family, special mementos, such as your great-grandmother’s china, may be passed along through generations. You may also inherit Uncle Fred’s prominent nose, Aunt Bertha’s musical talent — or your mother’s poor heart health. Family provides the foundation of well-being, physical attributes and our health — good or bad.

Many health problems, including major illnesses like heart disease and diabetes, as well as contributing risk factors such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol, can be rooted in genetics. If your family has a history of these health issues, you’re at higher risk for developing them.

Heart Health

Your risk of heart disease jumps up if you have a family history of heart attack — even if you don’t have other risk factors such as high cholesterol or high blood pressure. About 15 percent of all heart attacks are attributed to a family history.

And if someone in your family had a heart attack before age 55, you should be even more vigilant about your heart health. A recent study found having a first-degree relative (mother, father, sibling) with a heart attack under age 55 increased risk by 33 percent; having two relatives with a heart attack under age 55 increased risk by 50 percent.

Keeping other risk factors such as high blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol under control is even more critical if you have a family history of heart disease. Getting more active, quitting smoking and losing excess weight are essential.

Blood Sugar Management

When it comes to blood sugar management, genes aren’t the entire story but play an important role in developing a problem. Right now, research tells us a family history of type 2 diabetes is one of the strongest risk factors for getting the disease but it only seems to matter in people living a Western lifestyle — high-fat, low-fiber diets with minimal exercise.

If you have a first-degree relative who has diabetes, your risk of diabetes is higher than those with no family history. The odds of getting the disease increase with the number of relatives who have diabetes.

If you have type 2 diabetes and were diagnosed before age 50, the risk of your child getting diabetes is 1 in 7. If you were diagnosed after age 50, your child’s risk is 1 in 13. When both parents have type 2 diabetes, the child’s risk is 1 in 2.

Research has also found another disturbing trend in people who have a family history of diabetes: they’re more likely to gain weight and show signs of insulin resistance than people fed the same diet who don’t have a family history of diabetes. This means people with a family history of diabetes must work harder at keeping weight off. In a cruel cycle, obesity is also a strong risk factor for developing diabetes.

Take a Holiday Health Snapshot

As you gather with family during the upcoming holiday season, take time to find out more about your family history. Between the family vacation photo album display and the big game on TV, ask about the health of aunts, uncles, grandparents, brothers, sisters and parents. What health issues has anyone faced?

You can’t control the risk factor of having a family history of a certain problem. That’s why it’s even more important to address the risk factors you can control through good nutrition, regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight and managing cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar. Creating your family health snapshot is also helpful for your doctor so he or she can focus attention on specific medical issues or recommend appropriate screenings. So this holiday season, give the gift of better health by learning your family health history and risks — for yourself and for generations to come — and by improving your diet and lifestyle.

Relìv nutritional products, while not intended to treat any disease or condition, provide balanced nutrition for a healthier lifestyle and overall well-being. Some Relìv products, such as
CardioSentials® and GlucAffect®, are clinically proven to help manage risk factors such as high cholesterol, high blood sugar and weight issues.

Cheers to your health!

Reliv International Leads Dietary Supplement Industry With A Revolutionary Product Backed By Clinical Trial-CardioSentials

Reliv CardioSentials(R), a revolutionary dietary supplement shown to be safe and effective through an independent study.

Reliv CardioSentials(R) contains 1500 mg of phytosterols per serving. Foods containing at least 400 mg of phytosterols taken twice a day (800 mg total), as part of a diet low in saturated fats and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease.

Reliv CardioSentials was developed by Reliv scientists to help address some of the multiple factors causing the development of heart disease, including the complex balances of "good" and "bad" cholesterol levels, as well as blood glucose levels and oxidative stress.

"Total heart health requires a multi-dimensional approach that addresses the array of factors," said Carl W. Hastings, Ph.D. and Reliv Vice President of Research and Development.

The trial was conducted by Joe Vinson, Ph.D., a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Scranton. The 16-week randomized double-blind, placebo- controlled crossover study (the gold standard of clinical testing) aimed to determine the safety and effectiveness of Reliv CardioSentials(R) in reducing those key risk factors.

The summary report on the clinical trial states that the overall effect of the program for participants in the study was a significant reduction in the 10-year risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

Specifically, the study concluded that Reliv CardioSentials(R) significantly decreased total cholesterol, LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglycerides in test subjects with high cholesterol. In addition, the product increased HDL (good) cholesterol and reduced blood glucose levels.

The study tested two groups -- individuals taking statin (cholesterol- lowering) medications and individuals not taking statins. Both groups experienced significant antioxidant benefits from Reliv CardioSentials.

Other findings concluded the following results:
For those taking statin medications, the product caused no adverse interaction with statin medication and resulted in improvements in their average risk factor because of a decrease in LDL (bad cholesterol).
For those not taking statins, a daily serving of Reliv CardioSentials(R) significantly reduced total cholesterol, LDL (bad) cholesterol, triglycerides and glucose, and raised HDL (good) cholesterol.

It significantly decreased the overall risk factor for heart disease.

Reliv distributes its products exclusively through its network of independent distributors in the United States and 15 other countries. Reliv's international headquarters is based in Chesterfield, Missouri. For more information about Reliv, contact our website at http://optimumnutrition.reliv.com .
